Box in a Box, Norgine Ltd
Bear were appointed to undertake the civil and structural engineering design for this ‘Box in a Box’ project which was over three areas within the Norgine factory as follows:
New internal first floor & walk on ceiling:
A new first floor was constructed in what was an internal double height space. The frame was constructed from steel columns and beams supporting a new steel concrete composite deck.
External link corridor:
To link one part of the factory to another, a covered linkway was constructed. The linkway was suspended over an existing external path and constructed from steel columns and beams supporting a concrete composite deck. A drop in level from one unit to the next required a staircase which will was constructed from insitu concrete.
External AHU platform:
A new external AHU platform was required to house new air handling units as well as support new chiller units located on the external portion of the deck. The AHU platform spans over two existing buildings with columns located on either side of the buildings. The structure is a braced steel frame with the slab to the internal area of concrete composite deck and the external portion being of metal mesh grid flooring.
The AHU platform also supports a high-level services bridge to provide the new services an uninterrupted designated route into the building. This was steel a braced framed structure. A steel staircase was also designed to the AHU platform for personnel access.
This project required stringent coordination and contractor engagement to ensure high standards of health and safety standards are adhered to and the construction programme was met.
A sustainable surface drainage solution was utilized in line with the legislative requirements of the SAB authority by incorporating a rain garden to treat the surface water from the proposed AHU structure roof. We also undertook the temporary works design which included sheet piling walls to stabilize the existing road while the rain garden was constructed. Challenges on this project include the presence of existing underground services in the vicinity of the AHU structure which comprised on live utility services and drainage. The contractor also encountered several existing foundations clashing with the proposed foundation locations which required reactive engineering responses to avoid delays on site
